Colour Correction

As promised in one of my last blogs, I finally tried my luck with colour correction and colour grading.

In the same instance that I learned how to use the sound editing bits of Avid MC 8, my lecturer also showed me how to bring up the colour correction panel and play with the colours of my piece.

I experimented with the blacks, greys, and whites and left all the other colours to their own devices, since they did not really help with the look I was trying to achieve. Also, I needed to be careful not to tamper too much with the colours that the image would seem artificial or become too grainy.

This also meant, that I would need to create a slightly different colour effect template for close ups since they show more directly when the skin colour is off. After creating two different templates and saving them in my new effect bin, I applied them on my timeline.

As you can see in comparison, my footage has indeed become much more lighter than it originally was, even though I am still miles away from the brightness Stanley Kubrick's white possesses in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

But so far, I am content with what I have achieved. For the brighter colour and the slightly starker contrast emphasised the presence and the vastness of the space surrounding my character.
